Foster Success’s mission is to hear, support, and empower teens and young adults transitioning out of foster care on their journey to self-sufficiency. We are committed to improving the foster care system and ensuring that teens and young adults transitioning out of foster care are educated, housed, financially stable, employed, and connected to a support system by age 26. Our team accomplishes this through program delivery, policy change, and partnership developments in the areas of educational success, workforce development, health & well-being, financial empowerment, and youth engagement. Rooted in Indiana, Foster Success supports young people across multiple states through multiple programs
Position Overview
As part of the Foster Success team, the Volunteer Coordinator supports the organization’s mission by managing the planning and execution of volunteer engagement initiatives that advance fundraising, donor stewardship, and youth programming. This role coordinates volunteer logistics, ensures meaningful volunteer experiences, and fosters relationships with supporters and partners. The Volunteer Coordinator collaborates with program, development, and communications staff to ensure that volunteer activities align with organizational goals, help connect volunteers to meaningful experiences and engagement within Foster Success and that the voices of young people are present.
The Volunteer Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Development. This position will begin full-time, in-office (based in Indianapolis), and will have an opportunity to become a hybrid position.
Primary Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment & Coordination
Execute, monitor, and evaluate volunteer engagement strategy based on organizational goals and needs.
Assist in monitoring the volunteer engagement budget.
Seek, foster, and maintain relationships to support volunteer engagement opportunities by representing Foster Success at relevant meetings, presentations, community networking, and other events/forums.
Develop and foster partnerships with corporations, colleges, individuals, the community and any other avenue necessary to obtain the targeted number, quality, and diversity of relevant volunteers.
Design, create, and implement introductory engagement opportunities for individuals and/or partners.
Ensure recruitment campaigns are executed through the partnership of appropriate staff with the development of printed materials, and employing marketing and media strategies.
Management
Serve as the main point of contact for all volunteer inquiries.
Provide applicants with timely, professional, and prompt responses as they are moved through the application process.
Manage background checks and reference checks for potential volunteers.
Develop and maintain volunteer records within CRM (Salesforce), ensuring accurate tracking of hours, skills, and engagement.
Match volunteers with appropriate opportunities, providing clear expectations, training and ongoing support.
Manage volunteer event logistics such as reserving office space, ordering supplies for volunteer engagement opportunities, etc.
Collaboration & Support
Provide leadership by refining current and identifying and developing new opportunities for volunteers within the work of the organization by:
partnering with the development team to align volunteer activities with fundraising and donor engagement strategies.
partnering with program staff to identify volunteer needs across program areas and bringing youth voice and engagement (when appropriate) to those opportunities. With the support of the supervisor, provide logistical and administrative support for volunteer opportunities across all states in which Foster Success supports young people and sees a need for volunteers.
Collaborate with the communications team on volunteer photography and storytelling to highlight impact.
Provide limited event support for events such as Breaking Down Barriers, Annual Conference, and Taste of Thanks.
Retention, Data, Reporting & Evaluation
Recognize and steward volunteers through consistent and intentional communications, appreciation activities and events that celebrate volunteer milestones and special life events.
Provide at least one continuing education training for volunteers to increase awareness of issues that impact older foster youth.
In partnership with the AD of Development, develop online training/connection opportunities to increase engagement.
Obtain feedback from volunteers and program staff on volunteer experience through post-event evaluations.
Generate reports and provide metrics on volunteer engagement.
Use a variety of data to evaluate volunteer program effectiveness, volunteer and program staff satisfaction, and inform future planning.
Position Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Communications, Human Services, Public Administration, Business or Management, Psychology or Sociology, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
1-2 years of experience in event planning, volunteer management, or development support.
Exceptional organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, partners, and older foster youth.
Some early mornings, evenings and/or weekends required.
Some travel will be required, the majority within Indiana.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, and donor/CRM systems (Salesforce preferred).

Work a flexible schedule that includes some weekends and evenings to meet program goals.
Hold a valid Driver’s License and have access to a vehicle or the ability to rent a vehicle for work-related travel.
Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills and experience with and knowledge of relevant software, particularly Salesforce, Zoom, and Google and Microsoft Products.
