Job Description

Departmental summary: The Catalyst 2024 Program is a youth-centered Summer Bridge

Program that allows youth who have experienced foster care the opportunity to receive

additional support when transitioning to college. Catalyst is offered through Foster Success as

part of Indiana ETV. This year, Catalyst 2024 has partnered with IUPUI (IU-I) to enhance this

transitional support for youth. Catalyst will be a 7-week face to face learning program starting

June 17th-August 2nd, 2024.


Position overview: Catalyst 2024 Graduate Mentor (GM) will support the program by providing

residence hall floor administrative management; Catalyst program event management (when

applicable); aid in the facilitation of student development; responding to student issues;

provide supervision of the Catalyst Peer Mentors (PM); and guide PMs in coordinating student

related activities/programs. This will be done in collaboration with the Foster Success staff. This

position is fully on campus and roles will be fulfilled in a face to face environment. High levels of

independence and organization, as well as proficiency in digital communication, will be key to

successfully fulfilling this role’s duties.

This position will provide the hired applicant with experience working in a Hall Director capacity

within a learning community, and mentoring a diverse group of students with experience in the

foster care system. The hired person in this role will further develop their administrative,

disciplinary, instructional, mentoring, communication, collaborative leadership, community

building, and event planning skills.

The position is appropriate for graduate students with an interest in student affairs, social work,

education, higher education, communications, psychology/counseling, human services, or non-

profit/public affairs; but not exclusive to these areas.

The Catalyst GMs will have some flexibility around student class schedules during the day, but

GMs will be expected to conduct floor activities for the Catalyst participants at least once a

week. Catalyst GMs are also encouraged to participate in the Catalyst Cultural Experiences

throughout the program to further encourage a successful transition into college, mentorship,

and team building.


Description of duties:

● Communicate regularly with Foster Success and the Catalyst 2024 Staff regarding

participation in PM and/or Foster Success planned activities, and any discipline issues that

may arise.

● Attend and complete all required training and development meetings

    o GM and PM Campus Move In - June 2nd

    o GM and PM Employee Onboarding and Catalyst Training: June 3rd - 7th

    o Catalyst GM and PM programmatic and residential floor prep work: June 10th - 14th

        ▪ Assist with Foster Success Annual Conference: June 13th

    o Catalyst Participant Campus Move - In: June 17th

    o Catalyst Participant Onboarding (Orientation): June 18th, 20th, & 21st (19th - Juneteenth Observance)

    o Catalyst Program: June 24th - August 2nd

    o Catalyst Program Celebration Dinner: August 1st

    o Campus Move Out: August 2nd

    o Weekly meetings throughout the program

● Support participants in accessing available resources as needed and escalate concerns

to Foster Success staff members as appropriate.

● Assist in planning and facilitating Catalyst program activities; as needed.

● Work with Foster Success staff to develop and implement policies and procedures to

ensure healthy and safe environment for all Catalyst participants

● Perform all duties in accordance with FERPA guidelines to protect student

confidentiality and safety.

● Work to prevent and respond to emergency or crisis situations in an efficient and

effective manner; escalating said issues to Foster Success staff when necessary and

appropriate

● Promote connection and learning in the Catalyst 2024 student community, leading by

example and explicitly guiding mentees.

● Encouraged to attend and participate in the activities required of your mentees.

● Respond in a timely manner to all communication from Foster Success, Catalyst staff,

and students.

● Collaborate with fellow Catalyst GA to structure an on-call work schedule (days and

weekends) that will allow for full coverage for any questions or issues that may arise

among the participants

● Conduct yourself both within program sessions and in your online presence as a role

model - this may mean curating any social media that you share to reflect the values of

the program.

● Perform all duties in accordance with FERPA guidelines to protect student

confidentiality and safety.

● Lead weekly (6) floor activities (and facilitate discussion, if applicable)

● Promote connection and learning in the Catalyst 2024 student community, leading by

example and explicitly guiding mentees.

Qualifications Required

● Strong verbal and written communication skills

● Excellent organizational skills and capacity for managing tasks independently

● Experience with peer leadership

● Previous RA experience preferred, but not required for consideration

● An interest in learning new concepts, practices, and skills for personal growth and

development

● A commitment to inclusion and to the potential of all learners

● Preference given to students who have completed the Catalyst program or comparable

bridge programs successfully (i.e. THRIVE, GROUPS)

● Current graduate student (Masters degree) or 2024 Bachelors graduate
